Why do I think this? Why do great artists like Matisse know this for sure? Because every little aspect of a “normal” life conspires to pull one away from a creative approach to anything, whether it’s art or education or string theory. Don’t disrupt the status quo; don’t innovate; and for heaven’s sake, do not even think about threatening my livelihood with your new ways of doing something.
Even the busy-ness of everyday life can stymie creativity just because it demands your time. I’m reminded of a character in The Dive From Claussen’s Pier telling two young women that “family is the enemy of the artist”. It sounds so harsh put like that, but it’s true in a way.
