Best place to live…Vancouver, BC

An example of the things that make Vancouver one of the best places to live….water, mountains, snow…

I know everyone has probably heard that statistic about Vancouver being the best place to live etc.

But speaking as someone who actually lives there, I can assure you that yes, the statistics are not wrong….Vancouver IS one of, if not the best city to live in.

And people are always saying you need to be either earning megabucks or must have wads of hard cash to live here…Bah, humbug! What a load of garbage! At one time, I was earning just around $15000 after tax a year, and yet I managed to get by fine on that money. Ok, so I couldn’t buy my own house, or own a flashy car, but I survived quite happily, without being another Ebenezer Scrooge.

As always, what you hear and what actually transpires are two very different things, and I found to my satisfaction that those stories were not strictly true.

Take my case for example. I lived around the downtown east area, near Chinatown. Yes, that area does have it’s problems with addiction and social issues, but I was not exactly living on those streets, but in my own 1 bedroom apartment, which was cozy, very clean and tidy, and more importantly, very affordable.

Transport was no problem…99% of the time, I walked down from my apartment straight into a whole range of shops in the area…everything was close at hand and within walking distance. The Vancouver Central library, hundreds of coffee shops, restaurants etc were not more than a leisurely 30 minutes walk away. When a bus or train was needed, Vancouver’s TransLink bus stops were everywhere, and depending on where I wanted to go, a ticket costing $2.50 was all that was required (incidentally, that ticket could also be used on the Skytrains, buses or my favourite method of transport, the SeaBus!).

So no, despite those stories you hear of BC standing for “Bring Cash”, nothing could be further from the truth. What’s more, from that apartment at downtown east, I moved to Burnaby, a town nearby, and still managed to live on the same wage for more than 2 years! But hey, keep this a secret….we don’t want everybody moving here!

Anyways, I will be doing posts about some of the best known areas in downtown Vancouver for socializing, eating, taking photos etc very soon, so please bookmark this blog and drop in regularly.
