I’m a bit of an introverted-extrovert!
Yep, I know what you’re thinking….what the hell does that mean? And you know what? I don’t know what it means myself!
Let me explain. I reckon I’m a bit of a shy guy. That’s the introvert side. but then, I also have my moods. If I’m with friends, or sometimes even on my own, say in a pub or club, and someone challenges me to get up and say something, I get this massive adrenalin rush…and I get up and do it! That’s the extrovert side.
Like a few weeks ago, I was at the Hotel Patricia in downtown eastside here in Vancouver. Well, I actually kinda busted in, so to speak, after a long day walking around doing street shots. I needed a drink……It was a Thursday, and every Thursday is Jazz jamming night. So there I was, sitting leisurely sipping my drink, with Leonard and The Labrats playing their stuff on the stage.
Then Leonard suddenly finishes one song and before starting another, says that his next song is about rain….is there anyone here who comes from rainy London? that was my cue! I don’t know what happened to me, but I just got up, in the crowded pub, and said “Sure..I’m from London…and I don’t wanna hear about any more rain!”
At that, everyone started clapping and whooping, and Leonard asked me to come up on the stage and tell everyone a little about London. Normally, I would never ever do such a thing…but that day, I walked onto the stage and gave them a little lecture about london!
Anyway, the crowd loved it and clapped and whooped again. Afterwards, I couldn’t believe what i had done! So that’s me..sometimes!
Getting back to Hotel Patricia….it’s in a rough-ish area, by that I mean an area of addiction and social problems, but the hotel itself is fine, with many top musicians playing there every Thursday and at weekends.
Apparently, Pat’s Pub at the hotel was known as the Patricia cafe in the 1920s, when it was Vancouver’s central jazz location. Thousands of very famous musicians have played here, such as legendary great Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton, Lilian Rose, Oscar Holden, Leo Bailey and Ada “Bricktop” Smith.
Why not pop in if you have the time? Who knows, I may be there, too!
PS and no, I definitely was not drunk that day!
