James Dean and THAT car….

I was just looking through some of the photos that I’ve posted on here about celebrities using film cameras?

Well, when I got to the shot of James Dean, for some odd reason, I typed his name into a search engine to see if I could find out a little more about him. After all, he is one of the most enigmatic characters on tv, film, everywhere, even so many years after his death.

We all know that he died in a sports car, but what very few people know is this story I heard.

It involves Alec Guinness, the famous British actor, who has passed away. Alec was apparently in California for some film shooting at that time, and he had a lady friend with him, but every restaurant they went to, wouldn’t allow them in, as she was wearing trousers..this was way back in the 50s!

Anyway, so Alec and his lady friend came to an Italian restaurant, the Villa Capri, a local hangout for Hollywood people, they tried to get in, but the place was full. As they were walking down the street, a young man came up to the couple, introduced himself as James Dean, and asked them if they wanted to get into the restaurant, as he had just been in there, and could get them both in. Alec and his friend agreed and started walking back towards the restaurant, but James stopped them saying he wanted to show them something first. Dean had bumped into Guinness at the Villa Capri, a local Hollywood hangout. He was so proud of the car that he insisted upon showing it to Guinness.

So they walked down a side street, and there stood a brand new car, with a big cellophane bow around it and red roses on the roof.

James said it was a present form somebody to him. Alec asked him how fast it could go, James said he could do 150 mph in it. Then Alec asked him if he had driven it that fast and Jame said no, he hadn’t driven it yet.

Just then, Alec said he felt really weird, and his voice somehow changed a little, and he said to James…..”Don’t ever get inside that car and drive it, because if you do, I’m telling you, you will be dead by next Thursday.” Dean laughed off the suggestion. There was no way he could have known that Guinness’s warning would become a chillingly reality.

And what happened? James Dean ignored Alec’s advice…and crashed that car and died…on the following Thursday.

Afterwards, Alec said he didn’t know why he said that to James, but he felt really spooky even as he was saying it….

Anyone have any clue what happened here? How come Alec Guinness said that? Why? But there’s more…read on…

Sometime in April 1955, Life magazine commissioned the photographer Dennis Stock to do a photo documentary about the up and coming actor James Dean, so Dennis decided to include some shots of Fairmount, Indiana, where James’ hometown.

There, James, being young and cocky, asked Dennis if he could shoot him lying in a coffin at a local department store! Little was James to know that this would be his last trip back home, as was killed in September 30th that year.
